Question by AntDU: MayTag washer “knocking” in spin cycle?
My Maytag washer (older, stackable model) is knocking in spin cycle. It sounds as if something is hitting and it can only be heard as the spin cycle reaches top speed. Its fast and its loud. When I open the door, it slows down and the knocking goes away.

Any ideas?

Best answer:

Answer by Artemisc
Get a level and make sure it’s perfectly balanced. As speed increases the effects of not being balanced are amplified. If you don’t have a level, put your hands on it and see if there is even the slightest bit of a rocking motion when you push down on the corners. the feet generally can be screwed in or out to level it.

admin answers:

It does use less water since the tub is rotating horizontal and the smallest amount of water will touch all fabrics when it rotates. With top loader if the water level is too low it will not completely touch all fabrics therefore the water level must be higher to make sure. The negative is the front loader door is lower so you need to bend down just to look inside. You can add pedestal to raise it but these cost about $150 for each unit. Top and front loaders perform about the same.

Front loaders are more energy efficient, but you can get the same washing results with a good quality top loader. If your paying a lot for water, and doing a lot of laundry, the front loader may be worth the extra cost. I’d check Consumer Reports for the best brand. You can find copies of their magazine in your public library.

Will a washer and dryer get ruined if enclosed in a closet on an apartment balcony?

So, like many average apartments that include full size washer and dryer connections, the connections are often times outside on the patio or balcony, and housed inside a closet or cabinet type deal, usually with sturdy doors. My question is, I’m planning to invest about $1,000 for my set of GE Profile washer and dryer and I’m wondering now and afraid that it will get ruined be being outside and somewhat exposed to the elements as opposed to being inside.

I keep thinking that in the summer the little cupboard will be really hot, and really cold in the winter therefore the machine might bust itself when heating up. I’m also afraid that humidity from the spring and summer months might creep inside the little closet or that rain that gets on the balcony might make its way into the closet where the mechanics are.

Can anyone who’s had this scenario in an apartment give me some advice and tell me whether or not I should be worried or at least invest in a cheaper set…

admin answers:

I wouldn’t do it. The temperature changes and the elements would wreak havoc on the metal parts inside the machines. All that expanding and contracting with the heat and cold is bound to be bad for any part inside the washer and dryer. Try asking the salesmen at Lowes or Home Depot. They are usually quite knowledgeable about stuff like that.

I need help determining why this Apartment is at a “Promotion” price!?

My husband and I have been apartment hunting. We finally found an apartment that is in a good location, has everything we want (space, washer/dryer, 2 assigned parking spots, the floor level we want) This particular apartment is at a special promotion price as long as we have a move in date of Dec. 01, 2008. Everything looks good, we’ve looked at the actual location, inside and out. We can’t find a reason why this has been discounted. We are getting a monthly discount of $70, and $500 off the first month. We live in San Diego, so EVERYTHING here is expensive. The homes/town homes for rent that are in our price range are in bad neighborhoods or have bad set-ups. So we are going to stick with apartments.

Is there anyone out there that would have an idea of why this would be? We haven’t asked them straight up, we figured we would see why once we’ve seen the place, but everything looks perfect. It is on the 3rd floor and there is no elevator. But that is something that my husband and I prefer. So maybe it’s at the promotion price because not that many people want to live in the third level w/out an elevator? We just want to make sure that we are not over looking anything.

admin answers:

Promotion probably has to do with the time of year more than anything else. It’s typically harder to find tenants in November and December because of the holidays (people want to be situated in their homes, and paying for gifts/travel/meals/etc takes a huge chunk out of what they’d be paying to move in)

Your discount probably costs them less in the long run than it would to have the apartment sit vacant for a month or two.

admin answers:

There are many other repair company’s that will set appt’s. Is the reason you are dealing with sears because you bought a kenmore washer and dryer? You didn’t say. Have you checked your owners manual? They usually have a trouble shooting guide in them, check that to see if you can solve the problem yourself. By the way, if you bought a kemore, it is made by whirlpool, and is a better machine than those maytag’s that were having so many problems. If you bought your new appliances on a credit card, check with your credit card company to see what recourse you have through them. Some of them have a ‘lemon clause’, and will take care of getting you a new item. You could also try writing an e mail to sears headquarters and see if you can get any help that way. Good luck.

problems with washer and dryer?

Ok,so I dont know if any of you have heard of craigslist or not… but anyways I put an ad on there looking for a cheap washer and dryer to get us by, since i have two kids and a baby due in 5 weeks or less. A woman e-mailed me and said she had a matching set that she does not use but they both had problems, BUT still are working… so here is the problem-

They both work, except for each has a quirk. The washer doesn’t always drain, but will if you turn the knob to the drain setting and restart. The dryer is fine, except we had trouble with the automatic sensor, so we just used the timed setting and got used to how long things needed to dry. They are 2005 model; I have the manuals.

Do you think these would be easy to fix later?
and if so, can anyone tell me how, and how much?

She is only wanting 40.00 for both, which to me is a GREAT deal, I just have to go pick them up.

Anyways, please someone let me know, thanks!

The first thing you should know is that the brand name and model number are VERY beneficial in troubleshooting something. Without it we’re just playing ‘pin the tail on the donkey’.

I’m going to assume that they are a Kenmore/whirlpool set and that the washer is a top loader since those seem to be the most popular.

“The washer doesn’t always drain, but will if you turn the knob to the drain setting and restart.”

Does the timer advance all the way through on its own, or does it stop. If it stops then you have a dead spot in your timer. New timers are expensive, that’s something to live with. If the timer advances all the way through and the clothes are still heavy wet, but there’s no water in the tub, then you have a bad neutral spin, which requires a new transmission. Again, expensive, something to live with. Here’s the good news. If its a bad neutral spin, then that would only be a problem in a basement installation where the drain is up high (6 to 8 ft). Even with a bad neutral spin, if a washer has a low drain hose (4 ft) then it will still work without a hasel. If this woman had it in the basement and you plan on having it upstairs, then that won’t be a problem for you.

On the dryer, they use some metal strips on a plastic piece in the back of the dryer to sense the moisture in the clothes. These can sometimes get damaged or ripped out. They’re not that expensive and easy to repair.

Is this a good deal for a Washer and Dryer?

Somebody is going to sell me a set of LG Tromm Washer and Dryer purchased in 2007 in perfect condition for $1000.
Is that a good deal? It is an electric dryer and I will have to get a 220V outlet installed so I will probably be spending an extra $250 for that.
Should I get the set or go for a newer cheaper washer and dryer?
I will not be able to spend much more than $1300.
I definitely want a front loader set that I will be able to stack.
I should add that they each cost $1079 new (at Abt) and that they still have 3 years worth of extended warranty left.
So I would never be able to afford a pair that nice at this point.
$1300 each at Sears…

admin answers:

That seems like a fair price, but I would offer them $750, then go up to $800 tops.
It sounds like you aren’t too thrilled about the dryer being electric.
Make the sellers aware of that.
Maybe you could buy the washer, then buy a new or used gas dryer.
Then you wouldn’t have to add and run a new circuit, and you’d be saving yourself that extra money.

maytag washer centennial help?

Hey I got a Maytag washer and dryer set as a Christmas gift. The dryer works fine but the washer is very loud. I have been told it has no bottom so it makes it loud and echoes in my small closet that I have for the washer. Also it bounces off the title so it makes it louder. Anyway I am on the 3rd floor of an appartment building and it transfers sound very loudly down to the guy living under me.

Does anyone have a way to help with the noise? Does maytag sell base plates for their washers? Also I have tried to use rubber vibration feet to get rid of some of the vibrations and noise but it made it worse. Are the odds of getting plywood underneath the washer worth a try?

admin answers:

Hello,

These washers are loud to begin with, the no bottom pan makes it even worse.

I’ve heard of some people lining the inside of the cabinet with insulation, they claim it works, I have never tested it. The pads that I know work are called shake away pads, I have seen them for sale at big box hardware stores.

Adding a piece of plywood will make the washer shake worse, placing supports on the floor joist will, in your situation it sounds like that is not going to happen.

Good luck with you repair, if you have more question and require further assistance please stop by we would be glad to help.
